The P is just an in house designator. My 98 has PW at the end of the model code. P was also the code a few years back. Maybe it means some of the original Savage design has been brought back into it.
As for recognition, most of the people who read rider seem to be into the bigger bikes, at least, that's what I gather from the few issues I have thumbed through. I don't like Rider magazine, probably because I don't care for muscle bikes and related so-called "standards". Give me a simple, visually decent, slow poke old cruiser any day.
